Sights in Batavia
Batavia is a city in Genesee County in the U.S. state of New York. The population was estimated at 26,045 in 2019 by the U.S. Census Bureau. It is the county seat of Genesee County. Batavia is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls metropolitan area.
The city was founded in 1802 by Joseph Willcox, who built a log cabin and tavern on the Glenwood side of the river. Batavia became known as “The Windmill City” because of the large number of windmills erected to mill flour in early years. Many of the original mills are still standing, including the Elm Street Arts Centre, which is a community arts hub housing artists work spaces, galleries and performances spaces. The Batavia Muckdogs baseball team plays in Art McNally Stadium on Main Street.
Willcox sold his patent of 12,000 acres (49 km2) including Batavia and 12 miles (19 km) of the Genesee River to Caleb Barton in 1803. Barton set up a mill, store, and tavern, which he operated for about 25 years. In 1827, David L. Holcomb, of Holcombe, purchased the water power and old mill property. He rebuilt the dam and erected a new gristmill, woolen factory and sawmill. This made Holcomb one of the leading millers in western New York.
A village was incorporated in 1824, and the name was changed to Batavia in 1831. The Erie Canal, completed in 1825, passes through the center of the village, immediately west of the main business district. About a mile north of the village, in the Town of Stafford, is the western terminus of the canal where it meets Keshequa Creek and the Genesee River. Part of the village was once the terminus of the shortlived Auburn and Rochester Railroad (A&R), which ran west to Auburn, New York from Rochester in the 1830s. The GAJonkheer Store Museum on Main Street displays objects from the 19th century.
Batavia is home to many 19thcentury homes, commercial buildings and churches. The Alexander Building, Bank of Batavia Building, Woodside Tavern, and Universalist Church are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Richardson Olmsted Complex, formerly the New York State Psychiatric Institute, is a National Historic Landmark and is being redeveloped as a hotel, conference center and public park.
The implosion of the Batavia Downs casino on September 26, 2020 made national news. The former gambling hall had been closed since March 16 due to the COVID19 pandemic.
History of Batavia
Batavia is a city in Genesee County, New York, United States. It is the county seat and home to Genesee Community College. The population was 15,465 at the 2010 census.
The city of Batavia was once part of the town of Batavia, which today includes all of Genesee County except for the city of batavia and parts of the towns of Bergen and Byron. The town was created in 1802 when it was divided from the town of Holland. The first settlers in the town were veterans of the Revolutionary War.
The Erie Canal was completed in 1825 and brought new prosperity to the area. The city of Batavia was incorporated in 1832. The Batavia Academy was built in 1833 and became the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary in 1844. The seminary was the first in western New York and the second in the state.
The City of Batavia was home to many industries including the shoe and buggy whip manufacturer who later became the American chain store JC Penny. The Harvester Company was another large employer in the city making agricultural equipment. The Highland Park neighborhood was developed in the 1870s as a residential area for the workers of these factories.
Today, the City of Batavia is a thriving community with a vibrant downtown. The city is home to many small businesses, restaurants, and shops. The Batavia”>Batavia City School District serves the city. The Genesee County Fair is held annually in the city and is one of the largest fairs in New York State.
