History of Carlsbad (New Mexico)
In the early 1800s, what is now the city of Carlsbad was part of a land grant given to the Spanish by the Mexican government. The land grant included presentday Eddy and Guadalupe Counties in New Mexico, as well as a large area of Texas. The Spanish established a rancho in the area, which they called Rancho del Rio Pecos, and began grazing livestock on the land.
In 1837, the Republic of Texas annexed the land grant from Mexico and it became part of Texas. The following year, the first AngloAmerican settlers arrived in the area, led by John O’Loughlin. O’Loughlin established a trading post on the banks of the Pecos River, which quickly became a popular stop for settlers traveling west.
In 1846, the United States annexes the Republic of Texas, and the area containing presentday Carlsbad becomes part of the US. In 1849, the US Army establishes Fort Stanton in the area to help protect settlers from attacks by Native Americans.
In 1862, Fort Stanton is abandoned by the US Army during the Civil War. The fort is then used by the Confederacy as a base of operations in the New Mexico Territory. In 1864, a Union force recaptures Fort Stanton and the area remains under Union control for the remainder of the war.
In 1880, the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway reaches the Pecos River and a townsite is established near the railway station. The town is initially called South Spring, but is renamed Carlsbad after a nearby cave, which is itself named after a famous spa resort in Bohemia.
In 1899, Carlsbad is officially incorporated as a city. The early 1900s see a boom in the local economy due to the development of the area’s rich deposits of oil, gas, and sulfur. Carlsbad becomes known as the “Capital of the Delaware Basin” and the city’s population grows rapidly.
