Kirksville was laid out in 1839 and named for James Kirk, owner of the town site. It was incorporated on February 16, 1855. Kirksville was the first city in Adair County and was the county seat until 1866, when the county seat was moved to Independence, Missouri.
One of the most famous natives of Kirksville was Mark Twain, who was born in Florida, Missouri, just south of Kirksville. When he was four years old, his family moved to Hannibal, Missouri, another small town on the Mississippi River.

History of Kirksville
Kirksville is a city in Adair County, Missouri, United States. Kirksville was founded in 1827 and was named after Jesse Kirk, a local merchant who donated the land for the new town. The city was the site of several battles during the American Civil War. In 1866, the town was the site of the first confrontation between Jesse James and the “Younger Gang” and Pinkerton detectives. The battle resulted in the death of Detective John A. Allison and the wounding of James’ cousin and accomplice, Archie Clements. The event is commemorated by Pinkerton Park and a statue on the courthouse lawn.
In the late 19th century, Kirksville became a hub of medicine and education with the opening of two medical schools and a teachers college. The West Ward School, Kirksville’s first public school, opened in 1857. The American Civil War put higher education on hold in Kirksville, but only temporarily. The Methodist Episcopal Church organized a college in 1866 and it officially opened its doors in 1867 as Northeast Missouri Normal School, later becoming Truman State University. The Industrial Revolution came to Kirksville in the 1870s with the introduction of the railroad, which brought manufacturing and professional jobs to the area.
