The Timucua people were the original inhabitants of the area, and they called it “New Smyrna” after their friend and ally, the Scottish doctor John Turnbull. Turnbull had settle nearby in 1768, and he assisted the tribe with their medical needs.

In 1776, the British founded a colony on nearby Mosquito Inlet, which they used as a base for attacking the American colonies during the Revolutionary War. The British also brought slaves to work on their plantations, and many of them escaped and joined the Timucua.

After the war, the area was transferred to the United States. In 1824, the United States government built a fort in New Smyrna to help protect the area from the Seminole Indians, who were often at war with the U.S. Army.

In 1855, a New Smyrna businessman named John Menard built a sugar mill near the fort, which attracted a large number of workers from the Bahamas. Menard encouraged the Bahamian workers to bring their families with them, and by 1860, New Smyrna had a population that was majority Bahamian.

During the Civil War, the fort was used as a base for Union troops, and many of the Bahamian men fought for the Union army. After the war, the sugar mill closed, and the Bahamian community began to decline.

The developers hoped to create a resort town, and they built a number of hotels and a golf course. They also dredged a channel to make the area more attractive to boaters.
