History of Norwalk (Connecticut)

Norwalk is a city located in southern Connecticut, United States. According to the 2010 census, the population of the city is 85,603. Norwalk is included in the BridgeportStamfordNorwalk metropolitan statistical area which is also included in the Greater New York metropolitan area. The city is located approximately 40 miles northeast of New York City, making it a part of the New York metropolitan area.

The area which is now Norwalk was originally inhabited by the Algonquin people. The first European settlers in the area were the Dutch, who established a trading post in the area in 1614. In 1637, the English conquered the area and renamed it “Norwalk” after the town of Norwick in England. During the American Revolutionary War, Norwalk was a major supply depot for the Continental Army.
