History of Enfield
The city of Enfield is located near the Connecticut River in Hartford County, Connecticut. It is bordered by the towns of Suffield and East Windsor. The population of Enfield was 44,654 at the 2010 census.
The area now known as Enfield was first settled in 1679 by a group of descendants of Wampanoag and Mohegan people. The settlers purchased the land from the Podunk Indian tribe for three pounds sterling. The settlers named the area Enfield after a town in Middlesex, England.
The first European settlers in Enfield were predominantly farmers who grew tobacco and other crops. The soil in the Enfield area was very fertile, and the farmers were able to produce large yields.
