History of Madison (New Jersey)
Madison is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the United States 2000 Census, the borough population was 16,530.
The area now known as Madison was first settled by Europeans around 1680, when Dutch and English settlers moved into the area. The first recorded European settler in the area was John Lloyd, who established a farm near the presentday intersection of Kings Road and Madison Avenue. By 1736, the area was known as Bottle Hill, due to the large number of glass manufacturing operations in the area.
In 1834, the name of the village was changed from Bottle Hill to Madison, in honor of President James Madison.
The Morris and Essex Railroad which connected Newark and Morristown was completed in 1838, and Madison became a popular summer resort for wealthy New Yorkers. Many of the mansions built during this time period are still standing and are part of the Madison Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
During the early 20th century, Madison continued to be a popular summer resort for the wealthy. However, the popularity of such resorts began to decline in the 1930s, and Madison slowly began to transform into a commuter town for people working in New York City.
The Borough of Madison was officially incorporated on March 5, 1847.
Madison is located at the northern edge of Morris County, approximately 25 miles west of New York City. The borough is situated on the top of the Knollwood Escarpment, a ridge of land that runs west to east through Morris County.
