History of Cranford
Cranford is a township in Union County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township’s population was 22,625,[9][10][11] reflecting an increase of 2,078 (+9.9%) from the 20,547 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 2,134 (+11.6%) from the 18,413 counted in the 1990 Census.[20]
What is now Cranford was originally incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 14, 1871, from portions of the Townships of Clark and Linden.[21][22] Portions of the township were taken to form Garwood (April 27, 1904) and Kenilworth (March 13, 1907).[23][24]
Cranford was originally known as Cranberry, with many of its settlers coming from Cranberry, Suffolk, in England. According to the township’s website, “In 1720, Cranberry was primarily a community of farmers growing this native berry for sale. The cranberry business began to boom after the Revolutionary War, whenNewark Cobbler Thomas Adams began to bottle the cranberry juice. In 1864, a local merchant Charles A. Darling and others began buying large cranberry farms and converting them to cranberry bogs.”[25]
Darling proposed the name “Cranford” in 1869, at the meeting of the first Board of Chosen Freeholders to discuss incorporation of the township, and it was adopted on March 7, 1871.[1][26][27]
The township is notable for being the home of the first community hospital in the state of New Jersey, the CranfordKenilworth Joint Municipal Hospital, which opened on September 18, 1892.[28][29] An addition was added to the hospital in 1905, and in 1925, the hospital was renamed Muhlenberg Hospital in honor of Reverend William Augustus Muhlenberg, considered to be the “Father of the American Sunday School”.[30]
Cranford was also home to the Crane Company, which manufactured steam engines and pumps from 1869 until the 1890s when the company began producing papermaking machines. In 1881, the company built a two ton Steam Fire Engine which was the largest of its kind in America at the time. The engine, nicknamed Old Number Seven, is now on display at the Whippany Railway Museum.[31][32]
Cranford is noted for its Victorian architecture. Many homes and businesses in the township’s center are contributing structures to the Cranford Historic District, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Frank Bachman, former mayor of Cranford, led the preservation movement in the 1960s.[33]
