History of Woodbridge
Woodbridge is a town in New Haven County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 10,265 at the 2010 census. It is one of the earliest English settlements in the state. The town was named after Woodbridge, in Suffolk, England.
The town was founded in 1639 by Puritans from New Haven. They purchased the land from the Wappinger Indians. The town was originally part of the New Haven Colony. It became part of Connecticut in 1662 when the colony was chartered.
The town timber was used to build the White House and the U.S. Capitol. The town was also home to the first iron foundry in the United States, which supplied much of the iron used during the American Revolution.
The town’s proximity to New York City makes it a popular bedroom community. Many residents work in the city and commute daily. The town is also home to several corporate headquarters, including Pratt & Whitney and Tetley Tea.
