History of Auburn (Alabama)
The city of Auburn is located in eastcentral Alabama, United States. Auburn is the largest city and county seat of Lee County. It is considered a suburb of the larger metropolis of Atlanta. The population was 13,663 at the 2010 census. It is part of the AuburnOpelika metropolitan area.
The first settlers in the Auburn area were migrating Creek and Cherokee Indians who settled along the Tallapoosa River in the late 1700s. The Creek and Cherokee had been at war for several decades, and the arrival of European settlers in the region only served to aggravate the situation. In 1778, a group of settlers from Georgia led by Captain Daniel Lawson came into the area and established Fort Monro near presentday Auburn. Fort Monro was the first European settlement in the Auburn area.
The Lawson group was soon attacked and dispersed by the Creek, and Fort Monro was abandoned. In 1783, another group of settlers from Georgia led by John Garrett established a settlement called Garrett’s Station near presentday downtown Auburn. This settlement also came under attack from the Creek, and was eventually abandoned.
In 1785, the Creek ceded their land in presentday Alabama to the United States government by the Treaty of Hopewell. In 1806, the federal government created the Alabama Territory, which included presentday Auburn. In 1808, the first county in the territory, Montgomery County, was established, which include presentday Auburn.
In 1819, the Alabama Territory was admitted to the Union as a state. Auburn was first incorporated as a town in 1839 and then as a city in 1851. During the Civil War, Auburn was a major supply center for the Confederate Army and was also the site of a prisoner of war camp.
In the years after the Civil War, Auburn began to grow rapidly. The first Auburn University was established in 1856. In 1860, the population of Auburn was just over 1,000. By 1880, the population had grown to over 3,000. In 1892, the Auburn Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) was founded.
Auburn continued to grow in the early 20th century. In the 1920s, the population of Auburn grew to over 10,000. In 1960, the population of Auburn was just over 16,000. Today, the population of Auburn is over 30,000.
