History of Wellesley

Situated in eastern Massachusetts, the city of Wellesley is part of the Greater Boston metropolitan area. With a land area of just over 10 square miles, Wellesley is home to a population of 27,982, according to the 2010 census.

The area that is now Wellesley was first settled by Europeans in 1630. It was then part of Dedham until it became its own town in 1881. The town was named after Horatio Walpole, 1st Baron Wellesley, from whom the land had been purchased by a group of settlers.

Wellesley originally served as a farming community, with agriculture being the main source of income for residents. However, the opening of the Boston & Worcester Railroad in 1834 led to increased development and growth in the town.Among the new businesses and industries that came to Wellesley as a result of the railroad were the Rapid Manufacturing Company (which made stoves), the Wellesley Water Works (which provided water to Boston), and the Wellesley Woodturning Company (which made fireplace mantels and other wood products).

The town continued to grow in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, fueled by the arrival of several wealthy Boston families who built large estates here. Education also played a big role in Wellesley’s development, with the establishment of several private schools as well as Wellesley College, a women’s institution, in 1875.

Today, Wellesley is a thriving suburban community with a strong focus on education and a high quality of life. It is consistently ranked as one of the best places to live in the United States, and its public schools are among the best in the state.
