The Boones River provided the perfect place for these early settlers to set up their homesteads and farm the rich land. The town soon began to grow, and by the time the Civil War broke out, Webster City was a thriving community of nearly 1,000 people.

The War brought many changes to the town, as many of the young men went off to fight for the Union cause. The women were left to run the farms and businesses, and they rose to the occasion admirably.
