Sights in Warrensburg

Warrenton is a city in Johnson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 10,611 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Johnson County. Warrenton is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area.

The first settlers in presentday Warrenton were Charles and Nancy Hedgcoth, who came to the area in 1829. Warrenton was planned and platted in 1836, and it was incorporated as a city in 1853.

Warrenton was a stopping point on the Santa Fe Trail, and it was also a point of conflict during the American Civil War. In August 1861, Union troops occupied Warrenton, and the city became a Union stronghold. In September 1862, Confederate troops attacked Warrenton in what is known as the Battle of Independence. The town was attacked again in October 1864 by Confederate troops during Price’sRaid.

Today, Warrenton is a growing city with a thriving economy. The city’s historic downtown is home to a variety of businesses, including restaurants, shops, and offices. Warrenton is also home to several parks, recreation facilities, and trails.

History of Warrensburg

Settled in the late 18th century, Warrensburg is located in central Missouri near the geographic center of the United States. The city is home to Central Missouri State University and a regional campus of the University of Central Missouri.

The area now known as Warrensburg was inhabited by the Osage Native Americans when the first Europeans arrived in the early 1800s. The Indians called the area Waurito, which translates to “great blue heron.” The name was given because of the large number of these birds that nested along the banks of the nearby SniABar Creek.

Louis Blanchette, a French Canadian fur trader, was the first European to settle in the area in 1769. Blanchette staked a claim on a tract of land that included presentday Warrensburg. In 1788, Blanchette’s son Cyrille established a permanent settlement which he called “Blanchette’s Landing.”

Warrensburg was officially founded in 1833. The city is named for Maj. Gen. Joseph Warren, who lost his life at the Battle of Bunker Hill during the Revolutionary War.

In 1855, the Missouri Pacific Railroad reached Warrensburg. The arrival of the railroad spurred economic growth and the city soon became a hub for trade and transportation.

During the Civil War, Warrensburg was a divided city. The Missouri State Guard, which supported the Confederacy, occupied the city in 1861. In September of that year, Union troops under the command of Maj. Gen. Nathaniel Lyon drove the state guard out of Warrensburg. Lyon then establishing a Union garrison in the city which he used as a base to launch attacks against Confederate forces in the area.

In the years following the Civil War, Warrensburg experienced a period of prosperity. The city became home to several manufacturing plants and a thriving business community.

Central Missouri State University was founded in Warrensburg in 1871 as Normal School No. 2. The school was established to train teachers for the public schools of Missouri. In 1919, the name of the school was changed to Central Missouri State Teachers College. In 1965, it was again renamed, this time to Central Missouri State College. In 1971, the institution became a university and was renamed Central Missouri State University.

Today, Warrensburg is a thriving community with a population of more than 20,000. The city is home to a variety of businesses and industries, as well as Central Missouri State University.
