History of Waimea

Waimea is a city located in Kaua’i County on the island of Kaua’i in the U.S. state of Hawai’i. The population was 4,662 at the 2010 census.

The first Europeans to reach Hawaii were the British sailors under Captain James Cook who arrived in 1778. However, it was not until 1821 that Waimea was first mentioned in writing by George Vancouver who came ashore here during a stop on his famous voyage of exploration. Vancouver named the place “Port Winchester” after one of his ships, but the name never caught on.

In the early 1800s, Waimea was the capital of Kaua’i, and it was here that Kaua’i’s ruler, Kaumualii, signed a treaty with King Kamehameha I in 1810 making Kaua’i a part of the Kingdom of Hawaii.

After Kaua’i was annexed by the United States in 1898 as part of the Treaty of Annexation, Waimea became the county seat of Kaua’i County.

Today, Waimea is a thriving community with a colorful history. It is home to the headquarters of many companies and organizations including the Nature Conservancy, the Kaua’i Coffee Company, and the Waimea Hawaiian Homesteaders’ Association. The town is also a popular tourist destination, with several hotels and resorts, as well as the Waimea Canyon State Park.
