History of Tampa

On January 18, 1824, George M. Proctor fills in the “/s” shortcomings of the 1823 map of Tampa Bay by the U.S. Surveyor General’s Office with “Tampa”, the name of the new town to be platted on the peninsula between the Hillsborough River and Old Tampa Bay. This makes Tampa one of the first named cities in Florida.

The word “Tampa” may have come from the Calusa Indian language meaning “sticks of fire” or it may have come from the Seminole Indian word tampi, meaning “to screw up watertight”. Tampa is a placename with many stories.

In the early 1800s, Florida was a very dangerous place. There were no laws and no law enforcement. The only people who lived there were the native Indians, who were often at war with each other, and the Spanish, who mostly kept to themselves.

The United States had just won the Revolutionary War and was looking to expand its territory. The Louisiana Purchase in 1803 doubled the size of the country overnight. President Thomas Jefferson then started looking for a southern port city that could compete with New Orleans.

Jefferson sent James Wilkinson and William C. C. Claiborne to find a suitable location. They arrived in Tampa Bay in 1817 and were unimpressed. The bay was too shallow for large ships and there were no fresh water springs. They did meet with the local tribes and agree to a peace treaty.

Wilkinson and Claiborne left Tampa Bay and headed south to Pensacola. But, in 1818, the United States annexed Florida from Spain and Pensacola became a Spanish city again. This left Tampa Bay as the only deep water port in Florida.

Captain Hugh MacRae, who was part of Wilkinson and Claiborne’s expedition, decided to settle in Tampa. He bought a Spanish land grant of 4,000 acres (16 km2) and started a plantation. Other settlers soon followed and the village of Tampa was born.

Life in early Tampa was not easy. There was constant danger from alligators, snakes, and Indians. In 1835, the Seminole Indians started a three year war known as the Second Seminole War. This was the only time in American history when war was declared on a group of Indians.

The war ended in 1842, but not before nearly destroying the village of Tampa. Only two buildings were left standing when the fighting was over.

After the war, Tampa slowly started to rebuild. The first post office opened in 1850 and the village was incorporated in 1855. The population was still only about 700 people.

In 1861, Florida seceded from the Union and joined the Confederacy. Tampa became a major port for Confederate blockade runners. These were ships that snuck through the Union blockade to bring supplies to the Confederate States.

The blockade runners were very successful, but they also brought danger to Tampa. In 1862, the Union blockade fleet bombarded Tampa to try to stop the blockade runners. This was the only time in American history that a city was bombed from the sea.

The Civil War finally ended in 1865, but not before Tampa was occupied by both Union and Confederate troops. When the war was over, Tampa went back to being a sleepy little village.

In 1886, Henry B. Plant completed a railroad from Jacksonville to Tampa. This made Tampa the first city in Florida to be connected to the national rail system. Tampa was finally starting to grow.

In 1887, Plant built a luxury hotel in Tampa called the Tampa Bay Hotel. This was a huge resort hotel with over 500 rooms. It was the first hotel in the world to have air conditioning. People came from all over the world to stay at the Tampa Bay Hotel.

In 1895, another major event occurred that would help Tampa grow. Cigar manufacturers in Cuba started having problems with a plague of tobacco beetles. Many of the manufacturers moved their operations to Tampa.

Tampa became the cigar capital of the world. At the height of the cigar industry, there were over 150 cigar factories in Tampa. This made Tampa one of the richest and most famous cities in the world.

The cigar industry started to decline in the 1920s, but Tampa continued to grow. In 1925, the Gandy Bridge was built across Tampa Bay. This bridge made it much easier for people to get to Tampa.

In 1934, the city of Tampa and Hillsborough County merged. This made Tampa the largest city in Florida.

Tampa continued to grow in the 1940s and 1950s. In 1955, the Tampa International Airport was built. This made Tampa an even more popular destination.

Today, Tampa is a modern and vibrant city. It is home to over 3 million people and is one of the most popular tourist
