History of Bogalusa

Bogalusa is a city located in Washington Parish, Louisiana in the United States. The population was 14,280 at the 2010 census. Bogalusa is the principal city of the Bogalusa Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Washington Parish and is also part of the larger New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa combined statistical area.

The city of Bogalusa was founded in 1908 by the Great Southern Lumber Company. The mill was built to process the large amount of pine timber harvested from the nearby Washington Parish area. The mill and the town that grew up around it flourished for many years, and at one point Bogalusa was the largest producer of lumber in the world.

The timber industry began to decline in the mid20th century, and Bogalusa’s economy struggled as a result. However, in recent years the city has begun to rebound, with the opening of new businesses and the revitalization of its downtown area.

Bogalusa has a long and colorful history, and is definitely worth a visit if you find yourself in southwestern Louisiana.
