Aberdeen is a city in Harford County, Maryland, United States. The population was 14,959 at the 2010 census. Aberdeen is the largest municipality in Harford County. Anchor of the Aberdeen micropolitan statistical area, which comprises all of Harford County, it is one of three cities in the northeastern part of the state that constitute the political and economic center of the BaltimoreWashington metropolitan area.

Aberdeen Proving Ground is a U.S. Army facility located just north of the city. Its creation in 1917 fueled the growth of both the city and county.

The area now known as Aberdeen was first settled by William Steinmetz, who named the property “Steinmetz Park” after himself. In 1724 Steinmetz’s descendants sold 275 acres (1.11 km2), part of “Steinmetz Park”, to John without an agreement for payment. When Warden returned to the area several years later, he discovered that his agreement with Steinmetz had expired and that Steinmetz haddefaulted on the payment. The land was returned to Steinmetz’s family or sold back to John. A subsequent owner of the land, George Hughe, was involved in some questionable real estate practices in the early 1800s, which resulted in his imprisonment. The land was then sold to a church and subsequently subdivided into smaller parcels.

It wasn’t until 1892 that a post office was established and the town formally named “Aberdeen”. According to the town’s website, ” when the post office was established, Aberdeen Proving Ground was created nearby, and the new community took the name of the military installation”.

Manufacturing activity began in earnest in Aberdeen after World War II with the establishment of a fruit cannery, followed by the Aberdeen Silk Mill, a maker of women’s hosiery. The construction of Interstate 95 in the late 1950s spurred additional growth in the city, which has continued to the present day.

Today, Aberdeen is home to a number of businesses and industries, including thezbc.com, a web design and hosting company, and Ripken Stadium, home of the Aberdeen IronBirds, a minor league baseball team affiliated with the Baltimore Orioles.
