History of Gardiner
The city of Gardiner, Maine is located on the west bank of the Kennebec River in south central Maine, and it is the county seat of Kennebec County. The city has a population of 5,800 people. The city was first settled in 1623 by the English explorer Captain Thomas Dyke, and was originally called Gardynier’s Cove. The city was incorporated in 1754.
The city was named after Dr. Sylvester Gardiner, who was a prominent landowner in the area. He was also one of the founders of Harvard College. The city was an important shipbuilding center in the 18th and 19th centuries.
