History of South Hadley
South Hadley is a town in Hampden County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 17,514 at the 2010 census. South Hadley is home to Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley High School, Pioneer Valley Performing Arts Charter Public School, and the Hadley Farm Museum.
The area now known as South Hadley was first settled in 1659 by Alexander Aliendo, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was officially incorporated in 1753. The town is situated on the Connecticut River, with Hadley to the north and Holyoke to the south.
The town includes the villages of South Hadley Falls, Turner Falls, and Triangle, as well as the unincorporated hamlets of Olympia and Withingtonville.
The first mill in South Hadley was built in 1711 on Rocky Brook, which flows into the Connecticut River just north of the village of South Hadley Falls. The first gristmill was built in 1727, followed by a sawmill and a fulling mill in 1735.
The town’s early economy was based on agriculture and lumbering, with some manufacturing (mainly of textiles and paper) from the early 19th century onwards. The construction of the canal and railroads in the 1830s and 1840s spurred further industrial growth in the town, with paper mills, machine shops, and foundries being established.
