History of South Bend
South Bend is a city on the St. Joseph River in Indiana, United States. It is the fourthlargest city in the state, with a population of 101,168 as of the 2010 census. The city’s population has declined by 5.5% since the peak enumeration in 2000. This is attributed to changes in manufacturing and the economy in general.
The area was originally inhabited by the Potawatomi Native Americans. The city was founded in 1820 by fur trader Pierre Frieschutz Navarre, who established a trading post along the river. It was named for the nearby Benton Harbor, which was itself named for Thomas Hart Benton, a senator from Missouri. In 1824, Navarre sold the post to Alexis Coquillard, a FrenchCanadian fur trader. A permanent settlement began to develop around the post, and in 1829 the town was platted and renamed South Bend.
The South Bend area was settled primarily by immigrants from Ireland and Germany. By the 1840s, these two groups made up the majority of the town’s population. In the 1850s, the city became a destination for Catholic immigrants from Poland and the Czech Republic. The city’s Catholic population continues to be significant, with 11 Catholic churches and a Catholic hospital.
