History of Terre Haute

The city was founded in 1811 on the banks of the Wabash River. The name “Terre Haute” is French for “high ground.” The city grew quickly and became an important regional center for the Midwest. By the mid19th century, Terre Haute was a major railroad hub and the largest city in Indiana.
