History of Sedalia

Sedalia, Missouri is located in southcentral Missouri, on the edge of the Ozarks. The city is known for its role in the history of the American West and for its contributions to the development of the blues and jazz genres of music.

Sedalia was founded in 1866 by George R. Smith, a businessman from St. Louis. The city was originally named Sedville, after Sedalia, Kentucky. However, the name was later changed to Sedalia, after the nearby town of Sedalia, Kentucky, which had been named after the Roman goddess of hunting, Selene.

The city became an important stop on the Missouri Pacific Railroad and was known as the “Queen of the West.” It was also the site of the famous Sedalia shootout, in which lawman Wyatt Earp killed four men who had been terrorizing the city.

Sedalia was also the birthplace of Scott Joplin, the king of ragtime music. Joplin’s first ragtime composition, ” Maple Leaf Rag,” was published in Sedalia in 1899.

The city is home to the Missouri State Fair, which is held annually in August. Sedalia is also the home of the Sedalia Symphony Orchestra, the oldest symphony orchestra west of the Mississippi River.
