Royal Oak is a city in Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 57,236 at the 2010 census. It is the 81st most populous municipality in Michigan and the 527th largest in the United States.
Royal Oak was incorporated as a village, on May 18, 1921, and as a city, on April 28, 1957. The name originated in 1819, when Colonel Matthew Elliott, a trapper who operated in the area, petitioned to have the area around his cabin named “Elliott’s Town”. Shortly thereafter, Elliott bought the cabin from the local Chippewa chief for $500 and named it “Royal Oak”.
The city of Royal Oak is home to a number of tourist attractions. The Detroit Zoo is located in Royal Oak and is one of the region’s leading tourist destinations. The zoo is home to more than 2,400 animals and covers 125 acres (0.51 km2) of land. Other attractions in Royal Oak include the Oaklawn Garden Theatre, the National Shrine of the Little Flower, the Stagecrafters Baldwin Theatre, and the breakwater lighthouse.

History of Royal Oak
Early French explorers called the area where the city of Royal Oak is now located “Belle Fontaine” (“Beautiful Spring”), and it was 24 feet higher than the Detroit River. The adjacent Belle Isle Park served as a summer home and a hunting ground for many of the French settlers during the early 1800s.
The first permanent settlement in Belle Fontaine was established in 1818 by Hugh McMillan, and was named “McMillan’s Settlement”. In 1821, the area was included in the newly created Wayne County, and three years later the settlement was renamed “Royal Oak” after the Royal Oak trees that were prevalent in the area.
The village of Royal Oak was incorporated in 1891, and by the early 1900s it had become a popular summer resort destination for many Detroiters. The city continued to grow in the 20th century, and in 1942 it was selected as the site of the Oakland County Fairgrounds.
Today, the city of Royal Oak is a thriving suburb of Detroit with a population of over 57,000. It is home to many shops, restaurants, and businesses, and is also the site of the annual Arts, Beats & Eats festival.
