Ripponden is a town in Yorkshire, England. It is in the Borough of Calderdale, and is 4 miles (6.4 km) east of Halifax. The town had a population of 6,941 in 2001.
Ripponden is situated at the edge of the South Pennines, and is surrounded by moorland. There are many spectacular views to be seen, especially from the reservoirs. The town has also been home to several famous people, including the Bronte sisters.
The Ripponden area was first settled in Viking times, and the town itself was founded in the 12th century. The name Ripponden comes from the Old Norse for “rippa dyyn”, meaning “folding hills”.
In the 18th century, Ripponden became known for its cloth industry. Many of the town’s mills were powered by water from the nearby rivers and reservoirs. The towns of Ripponden and Hebden Bridge were key centres of the woollen industry. Early History
The name Ripponden is derived from the Old English words ripene and dun, meaning “the ridge where the rye grows”. The area was settled during the AngloSaxon era and appears in the Domesday Book as Rippendene.
The village was owned by the de Lacy family during the Norman period and remained in their hands until the 13th century when it was acquired by the Earls of Warren. Ripponden was then passed down through the Warren family until the 14th century when it was bought by the Savile family.
The Saviles held the manor of Ripponden for over 200 years and during that time the village prospered. It was during the Savile period that Ripponden Church, dedicated to St. Alan, was built.
In 1624, the manor of Ripponden was sold by the Saviles to the Horton family. The Hortons were a wealthy family from Yorkshire and they set about improving the village. They built a new hall and a grammar school, which attracted pupils from all over the region.
The Horton family continued to own the manor of Ripponden until the early 20th century when it was sold to a property developer.
20th Century
The 20th century saw Ripponden become a commuter village for the nearby cities of Leeds and Bradford. Many of the older buildings in the village were demolished and replaced with modern housing estates.
Despite this, Ripponden still retains its village feel and is a popular place to live. It has a number of good schools and is within easy reach of the Yorkshire Dales and the Peak District National Park.
