History of Askern

The origins of the town of Askern can be traced back to the AngloSaxon period when it was known as Acorna. The name is thought to derive from the Old English ‘aecer’ meaning oak tree and ‘na’ meaning water, probably in reference to the stream that flows through the town.

The town developed around the 12th century when the monks of Newburgh Priory built a chapel here dedicated to St Oswald. A market soon developed and in 1249 Askern was granted a charter by Henry III.

The following centuries saw Askern emerge as an important market town and stopping place for travellers. Many inns and taverns were established to cater for the needs of travellers and the town also became known for its yearly fair.

The industrial revolution brought change to Askern and the coming of the railways in the 19th century further transformed the town. Coal mining became an important industry in the area and Askern grew rapidly as a result.

The 20th century saw Askern continue to develop as a coal mining town. However, the industry went into decline in the latter part of the century and the last mine closed in 1986.

Since then, Askern has reinvented itself as a commuter town for those working in the nearby city of Sheffield. It has also become a popular destination for leisure activities with several golf courses and a country club.

Despite its relatively small size, Askern has a rich history that spans many centuries. It is a town that has endured many changes but remains an attractive and welcoming place to live, work and visit.
