History of Bath
Bath is a city in the county of Somerset, England, known for its Romanbuilt baths. In 2011, the population was 88,859. Bath is in the valley of the River Avon, 97 miles (156 km) west of London and 11 miles (18 km) southeast of Bristol. The city became a World Heritage site in 1987.
The city became a spa with the Latin name Aquæ Sulis (“the waters of Sulis”) c. 60 AD when the Romans built baths and a temple in the valley of the River Avon, though hot springs were known even before then. Bath Abbey was founded in the 7th century. Several other Christianitythemed buildings were constructed in later centuries, and the city became a tourist destination more famous for its baths than its churches.
Tourism grew in the Georgian era with the building of the Royal Crescent and Theatre Royal, but it was limited until the arrival of the railways in the 19th century. Bath then became popular for Victorian society as a country spa town. New industries developed around the city, including engineering, papermaking, and printing.
