History of Pompano Beach
Pompano Beach is a city in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 99,845 at the 2010 census. Pompano Beach is located along the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean just to the north of Fort Lauderdale. It is considered part of the Miami metropolitan area, which was home to an estimated 6,012,331 people at the 2015 census.
The history of Pompano Beach begins with a bang: at the end of the last Ice Age, about 12,000 years ago, a meteorite crashed into the area that is now Pompano Beach. This resulted in a large crater, which eventually filled with water and became a lake.
The first human inhabitants of the area were the Tequesta, a Native American tribe. The Tequesta lived in what is now Pompano Beach until the early 18th century, when they were forced out by the Seminole Indians.
In 1836, the U.S. government built a fort near the presentday city of Deerfield Beach, about 15 miles (24 km) south of Pompano Beach. This fort, known as Fort Lauderdale, was intended to protect settlers from the Seminole Indians.
In 1849, the Florida Legislature created Broward County from parts of Dade and Palm Beach counties. The city of Pompano Beach was not incorporated until 1952.
In 1908, the first bridge over the Hillsboro Inlet was built. This bridge allowed cars and pedestrians to cross from Hillsboro Beach to Deerfield Beach.
In 1925, the city of Pompano was chartered. This marked the beginning of rapid growth in the area.
