History of Fredonia
The Village of Fredonia was settled in 1811 by pioneers from Connecticut, led by surveyor Amos Gray. They named their community “Fredonia” in honor of Gray’s hometown, New Milford, Connecticut, which had recently adopted the name in recognition of American Revolutionary War hero General Nathaniel Greene.
The Village of Fredonia was officially incorporated in 1812, making it one of the earliest communities in western New York State. The village grew rapidly, fueled by the demand for its products, particularly potash and lumber, as well as by the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, which made transportation of goods to markets much easier and less expensive.
The Fredonia demonstration on January 2, 1826, was a pivotal event in the history of religious freedom in the United States. Led by Baptist minister and reformer Isaac Knapp, a group of residents went to the courthouse to demand that the county clerk issue them a license to perform marriages. When the clerk refused, they defied him and held a public ceremony in which five couples were married. This act of civil disobedience helped lead to the passage of the nation’s first law guaranteeing religious freedom, the New York State Free Exercise of Religion Act, in 1828.
The Fredonia Opera House, built in 1891, is one of the oldest continuously operating professional live theaters in the country and is a National Historic Landmark. The Opera House has been host to many famous performers over the years, including Buffalo Bill Cody, Ella Fitzgerald, Benny Goodman, and the Marx Brothers.
