History of Newburgh
Newburgh is a city located in Orange County, New York, United States, 60mi north of New York City. It is on the Hudson River, south of the town of Newburgh, in the Hudson Valley region. The Newburgh area was first settled in the early 18th century by the Germans and British. During the American Revolution, it served as the headquarters of the Continental Army. In 1783, the city was burned down by the British during the retreat from Philadelphia. The rebuilt city served as the Capital of the United States from March 1783 until April 1784, when the Congress and Capital moved to Hartford, Connecticut.
In the 19th century, Newburgh became an important industrial city, fueled by the development of the Erie Canal and the rise of the iron and steel industry. With the growth of industry, came an influx of immigrants from Ireland, Italy, and other countries, which helped to double the city’s population between 1850 and 1900. Newburgh’s location on the Hudson River and its proximity to New York City made it a perfect place for the development of the railroad industry in the 19th century. The City of Newburgh was chartered as a village in 1827 and as a city in 1865.
During the 20th century, Newburgh experienced a decline in manufacturing, which was exacerbated by the closure of the Erie Canal in 1919 and the simultaneous decline of the railroad industry. The city’s economy was further hurt by the Great Depression in the 1930s. In the second half of the 20th century, the city began to experience a renaissance, spurred by the redevelopment of the waterfront, the construction of Interstate 84, and the establishment of Stewart International Airport. Today, Newburgh is a vibrant city with a diverse population and a thriving arts and culture scene.
