History of Silver City

When people think of the Wild West, faded memories of cowboys and outlaws come to mind. And while that’s certainly part of the history of Silver City, New Mexico, there’s so much more to this city’s storied past.

Founded in 1858 by miners hoping to strike it rich in the nearby hills, Silver City was originally called La Ciudad de Plata de Las Palomas or “The City of Silver of the Doves.” And while the early days were certainly miningcentric, the town soon became a bustling hub for the surrounding areas with a population that grew to over 10,000 by 1880.

With the coming of the railroad in 1881, Silver City only continued to grow in both size and importance. New businesses cropped up and the town became the seat of government for Grant County.

The 20th century saw its share of ups and downs for Silver City, but the town has always maintained its smalltown charm. In recent years, the downtown area has undergone a renaissance with new businesses and a renewed focus on the arts.

Today, Silver City is a thriving community with a rich history and a bright future. Here’s a closer look at how this southwestern gem came to be.
