The city was founded in 1887 by Napoleon Bonaparte Blanton, a Confederate veteran of the American Civil War. It was named for Blanton’s father, Paul Blanton, who had been a colonel in the Confederate Army.

History of Pauls Valley
Pauls Valley is at the gateway of the Arbuckle Mountains in southcentral Oklahoma. The city owes its existence to the construction of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway through the Indian Territory in the late 1880s. The railroad brought new settlers and prosperity to the area and Pauls Valley became an important stop on the “Main Line of the World”.
In 1832, the Choctaw Indians ceded their claim to the land that would become Pauls Valley to the United States as part of the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek. The treaty opened the door for white settlement in what was then Indian Territory. In the early 1880s, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway was built through the Indian Territory, opening up the area for further settlement.
The city of Pauls Valley was founded in 1888 by Robert W. Paul, a local rancher and businessman. The city was named for Paul, who donated the land for the town site. Pauls Valley rapidly grew into an important stop on the Santa Fe Railway. The city was officially incorporated in 1898.
In the early 1900s, Pauls Valley was a thriving agricultural community, known for its production of wheat, corn, hay, and cotton. The Santa Fe Railway played an important role in the city’s development, shipping agricultural products to markets across the country.
