History of Hillsborough (New Hampshire)
The early history of Hillsborough, New Hampshire is closely intertwined with that of its neighboring town, Haverhill. Both towns were originally part of a larger town called Monadnock No. 4, which was established in 1751. The first permanent settlers in the area were John and Mary Morse, who arrived in 1761. They built a log cabin and began clearing the land for farming. Other settlers soon followed, and by 1766 there were enough people living in the area to warrant the establishment of a separate town. The residents of what is now Hillsborough petitioned the New Hampshire General Court to be set apart as a new town, and on June 17, 1769, the town was officially incorporated as Hillsborough.
The town continued to grow throughout the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. By 1800, there were nearly 1,000 residents living in Hillsborough. The town became known for its agricultural products, particularly dairy items and potatoes. In 1809, Hillsborough was selected as the county seat of Hillsborough County, and the following year a courthouse and jail were built.
The town continued to prosper in the decades that followed. In 1828, the nails used to construct the first U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C. were made in Hillsborough. In 1838, the Boston & Lowell Railroad opened a station in the town, further boosting its economy.
However, Hillsborough’s Growth came to a screeching halt in the 1850s, when the town was hit hard by two devastating fires. The first fire, which occurred in 1854, destroyed over fifty buildings, including the courthouse and jail. The second fire, just two years later, claimed even more structures. In the wake of these disasters, the town’s population began to decline, and it would not regain its prefire levels for several decades.
Despite these setbacks, Hillsborough bounced back in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Boston & Maine Railroad built a new station in the town in 1874, and in 1887, the Hillsborough Bridge was constructed, connecting the town to Haverhill. These improvements helped to spur new economic growth, and by the early twentieth century, Hillsborough was once again a thriving community.
The town continues to prosper to this day. In recent years, Hillsborough has been working to revitalize its downtown area, and the results are already evident. New businesses are moving into the town, and old ones are being restored. Hillsborough is once again a vibrant community, and its future looks bright.
