History of Bordentown
Bordentown is a borough in Burlington County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough’s population was 3,924,[8][9][10] reflecting an increase of 107 (+2.8%) from the 3,817 counted in the 2000 Census,[18] which had in turn increased by 239 (+6.7%) from the 3,578 counted in the 1990 Census.[27]
Bordentown was originally incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 2, 1852, from portions of Chesterfield Township and Mansfield Township. Portions of the township were taken to form Fieldsboro borough (March 7, 1875) and Bordentown city (April 6, 1867).[28] The township was renamed Bordentown Township as of November 6, 1955.[29]
What is now Bordentown Borough was originally incorporated as a town by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 11, 1855, from a portion of Bordentown Township. The borough was reincorporated on March 15, 1867, and again on February 21, 1868.[30] The name was changed to “City of Bordentown” on April 19, 1867, and back to “Bordentown” on November 15, 1955, when it again became a borough.[31][32]
The Lenape Native Americans first inhabited the area. They were a peaceful agricultural people who shared the land with the wild game.[33] With the European settlement of Bordentown beginning in 1682 under English Quaker Sarah Kinsey, the Native Americans sold some of their ancestral lands in 1686 for goods worth 13 pounds, 10 shillings.[34][35]
Under the terms of a land grant from King Charles II of England, confirmed on June 23, 1681, by Governor Edmund Andros, Kinsey and twelve other Quakers, known as the “Proprietors”, purchased around 33,000 acres (130 km2) of west New Jersey west of the falls of the Delaware River.[36] By 1717, they had acquired diesnities the entire west bank of the river from the Lenape.[37] During the French and Indian War (1755–1763), Bordentown was settled by Englishspeaking immigrants from Philadelphia as a refuge from fighting in New York and northern New Jersey. These settlers were willing to pay higher rents than Philadelphia Quakers, who were mostly content to own farmland outside the city. By 1769, Bordentown’s population had reached 500. It was incorporated as a city on April 6, 1867, on the same day as its namesake and 19 years before becoming a part of Burlington County.[38]
From the early days of the nation, Bordentown was the site of grand estates built by wealthy Philadelphians, including Joseph Bonaparte, the older brother of Napoleon, who lived in Bordentown from 1815 until his death in 1844. Bordentown became the capital of the state of New Jersey in 1788 and remained the state capital until 1790, when the capital was moved to Trenton.[39]
In 1825, the Bordentown School, a selective college preparatory day school for boys, was founded by the Rev. Lester Hinsdale. It operated until 1972.[40]
Bordentown is home to the 4th oldest volunteer fire company, established in 1765, and the first free public library in New Jersey, established in 1766 by Sarah Kinsey,[41] as well as being the site of the only duel fought between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton, on July 11, 1804.
