Totowa is a city located in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city’s population was 9,011, reflecting an increase of 877 (+10.8%) from the 8,134 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 1,024 (+14.3%) from the 7,110 counted in the 1990 Census.
Totowa was formed as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 15, 1898, from portions of Wayne and Paterson. Totowa was incorporated as a city on April 14, 1902.
History of Totowa
The history of Totowa, New Jersey, United States, begins long before the city was officially incorporated in 1898. PaleoIndians were the first known people to live in the area now known as Totowa, and their artifacts have been found in the nearby Passaic River valley. The Lenape Native Americans settled in the area by the 1600s.
The first European settlers were farmer John Treat and his family, who arrived in 1678 from Connecticut. By 1709, the Treats owned about onethird of the land that is now Totowa. The farmstead built by the Treats near what is now the intersection of Union Boulevard and Minisink Road eventually became known as the Old Stone House. It is the oldest surviving structure in Totowa and is now a local historical landmark.
The area remained rural throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, and the Old Stone House was the only notable structure in the area. Totowa was finally incorporated as a borough in 1898. Since then, it has slowly evolved from a sleepy rural community into the bustling suburban town it is today.
