History of North Little Rock
Prior to the European settlement of Arkansas, the area now known as North Little Rock was inhabited by Native Americans, specifically the Osage. The first European settlers in the area were a group of French fur trappers and traders who arrived in the 18th century. These early settlers named the area La Petite Roche, which translates to “the little rock.”
In the early 19th century, the area was purchased by the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase. Soon after, the Arkansas Territory was established and Little Rock became its capital. Around this time, a small settlement began to develop on the north side of the Arkansas River, across from Little Rock. This settlement was initially known as Argenta (named for the silver deposits in the area) but was later renamed North Little Rock in 1901.
During the American Civil War, North Little Rock was occupied by Union troops as they sought to control the Arkansas River. After the war, North Little Rock continued to grow, becoming an important industrial center in the state. In the early 20th century, the city became known for its cement production, with a number of cement companies setting up operations there.
Today, North Little Rock is a thriving city with a population of over 62,000. It is home to a number of businesses and industries, as well as several museums, parks, and other attractions.
