History of Centralia (Washington)

Centralia is a city located in the Lewis County of Washington State, United States. The city was founded in the late 19th century and was initially settled by coal miners who were attracted to the area by the presence of coal deposits. The city developed rapidly as a coal mining center and by the early 20th century, it had a population of over 1,000 people. However, the city began to decline after the Second World War as the coal mines were closed down and the population started to move away. In the early 21st century, the city had a population of less than 10,000 people.

Centralia was founded in 1884 by Daniel C. Hanford, a businessman from Seattle. Hanford had originally intended to build a railroad town at the junction of the Milwaukee Road and the Northern Pacific Railway but the plans fell through. However, he was still attracted to the area by the presence of coal deposits. Hanford built a hotel and a store in the town and advertised Centralia as a coal mining center. The city soon attracted a large number of coal miners who came looking for work.

The city developed rapidly as a coal mining center. By 1886, there were over 20 mines in operation in the city and the population had reached 1,500. The city also became an important center for the timber industry as the mines needed timber to prop up the tunnels. In the early 20th century, Centralia was one of the largest cities in Washington State with a population of over 5,000 people.

However, the city began to decline after the Second World War as the coal mines were closed down. This was partly due to the development of alternative energy sources such as oil and gas. The population of the city started to decline as people moved away in search of work. In the early 21st century, the city had a population of less than 10,000 people.
