History of Newbury
Newbury is a historic town and civil parish located in the West Berkshire district of Berkshire, England. It lies on the River Kennet, 25 miles (40 km) east of Reading, 28 miles (45 km) south of Oxford and 23 miles (37 km) west of Basingstoke. Historically part of Buckinghamshire, Newbury was transferred to Berkshire in 1887.
The earliest signs of human activity in the area date back to the Paleolithic era, with flint tools and burial mounds being discovered in the area. In the Iron Age, a hill fort was established at Beacon Hill, and a number of other settlements were also founded around the same time.
The Roman conquest of Britain began in 43 AD, and the town was located on the main road between London and Bath. A number of Roman villas were built in the area, and a large garrison was stationed at Newbury.
The town continued to grow in the postRoman period, and was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086. It became a market town in the 12th century, and was granted a charter by King John in 1214.
During the 13th century, the town was ravaged by both the First and Second Barons’ Wars. In 1643, during the English Civil War, the town was occupied by Parliamentary troops.
The town suffered further damage during the Second World War, when it was subject to a number of air raids by the German Luftwaffe.
