Aughton is a town located in the West Lancashire district of Lancashire, England. The town is situated on the northern edge of the city of Liverpool, 8 miles (13 km) to the east of Southport and 24 miles (39 km) north of the Liverpool city centre. The town had a population of 10,042 at the 2011 census.
Aughton is bounded by the Yorkshire Dales National Park to the north and the Forest of Bowland to the south. The River Ribble forms the western boundary of the town.
The town has a number of historical and architectural sights. These include Aughton Church, which dates back to the 14th century, and the Grade II listed Aughton Hall. The hall was built in 1624 and is now used as a conference centre.

History of Aughton
Situated in the West Lancashire countryside, the village of Aughton has a history that dates back to the 11th century. The Village is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, when it was known as ‘Oitone’. At that time, the Manor of Aughton was owned by Randle, one of William the Conqueror’s knights.
The first record of a church in Aughton is from 1292, when a chapel dedicated to St. Michael was built. This chapel was replaced by the presentday Church of England parish church of St. Michael and All Angels in 1856.
Aughton was originally a farming village, but during the Industrial Revolution it became a coalmining community. The first coal mine was opened in 1750, and by the early 1800s there were eight coal mines in operation in the village. The last mine closed in 1966.
Today, Aughton is a bustling village with a population of around 8,000. It has several shops and businesses, and is also home to Aughton High School.
