History of Alderley Edge
Alderley Edge is a village and civil parish in the unitary authority of Cheshire East and the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England. It is situated about 11mi south of central Manchester, at the southern edge of the Peak District National Park. The population of the civil parish as of the 2011 census was 3,950.
The village is notable for its expensive houses and the Alderley Edge Hotel. It is a popular destination for daytrippers and tourists, with numerous footpaths and a country park. It is also home to the exclusive Alderley Edge School for Girls.
The village name ‘Alderley’ is derived from the Old English ‘alder ley’, meaning ‘clearing in the alder trees’. ‘Edge’ is derived from the Old English ‘ecg’, meaning ‘edge or slope’. The village is recorded in the Domesday Book as ‘Ercheslei’.
The earliest evidence of human habitation in the area is a Bronze Age axe head found near the village. Roman coins have also been found.
A Saxon cross shaft, inscribed with the date 951, was unearthed in the churchyard in 1879. It is now on display in the British Museum.
The village was recorded in the Domesday Book as having two churches and a mill.
The Norman conquest saw the village pass into the hands of the de Trafford family. The de Traffords built a moated manor house, parts of which still stand today. They also built a chapel, dedicated to St Werburgh, which later became the parish church.
The de Traffords held the manor of Alderley until the 14th century when it passed to the Davenports. The Davenports built the current parish church, which dates from the 15th century, and the Grade II* listed humpback bridge over the river Bollin. They also extended the moat around the manor house.
The Davenports held the manor until the late 17th century when it passed to the Mainwaring family. The Mainwarings sold the manor to the Egerton family in 1778. The Egertons owned the manor until the early 20th century.
The village was developed as a residential suburb of Manchester in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many of the houses were built for wealthy industrialists and businessmen from Manchester.
