History of Burley
Burley is a historic village situated in the heart of the New Forest, Hampshire. It lies on the edge of the county boundary with Dorset, at the foot of the Stour valley and on the River Avon. The name Burley means ‘Stronghold by the stream’ and refers to the Norman castle that was built here in the 12th century.
The castle was one of a number of fortified residences built by William the Conqueror’s son, Henry I, in the New Forest to secure royal control of the area. It was later destroyed in the Civil War and only the earthworks remain. The village grew up around the castle and prospered in the medieval period as a centre for the wool trade. Many of the timberframed houses in the village date from this time.
In 1547, Burley was the scene of a bloody skirmish between troops loyal to King Henry VIII and those of his rebellious son, Edward VI. The fighting, known as the Battle of Bibury, took place in the streets and ended with the rout of the rebels.
