History of Myrtle Beach

The area now known as Myrtle Beach has been inhabited for thousands of years by indigenous peoples. At the time of European contact, the area was inhabited by the Waccamaw people. The first European settlers to arrive in the area were the English, who established a colony along the Waccamaw River in the late 17th century.

The town of Myrtle Beach was originally founded in 1837 as New Town, a small farming community. In 1857, the town was renamed after the myrtle trees that grew in abundance along the coast. The town began to grow rapidly in the late 19th century and early 20th century as a resort town, attracting tourists from across the United States.

Myrtle Beach became a city in 1957, and has continued to grow in recent years. The city is now a major tourist destination, with millions of visitors each year. The city is home to a number of attractions, including the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans minor league baseball team, and many golf courses.
