History of Mount Vernon (Illinois)
Mount Vernon is a city in southern Illinois, United States. The city is the county seat of Jefferson County and is also the largest city in the county. Mount Vernon is located on the Big Muddy River and is about 60 miles (97 km) from downtown St. Louis, Missouri. The population was 15,277 at the 2010 census.
Mount Vernon was founded in 1817 by Zadok Casey, who named it after George Washington’s plantation, Mount Vernon, in Virginia. The town was originally settled as a farming community, but soon became a river port due to its location on the Big Muddy River. In 1824, the first steamboat arrived in Mount Vernon, and by 1830 the town was a thriving river port.
The arrival of the Illinois Central Railroad in 1855 brought further growth to Mount Vernon, and the city became a stop on the Underground Railroad, a network of safe houses and routes used by slaves escaping to freedom in the Northern states.
