History of Lower Southampton
When Europeans first arrived in the area that is now Lower Southampton, the Delaware (or Lenni Lenape) Indians were already living in the region. The name “Southampton” was derived from the original English settlers who came from Southampton, England. These early settlers arrived in Southampton Township in 1685.
The area now known as Lower Southampton was originally part of Bucks County. In 1752, a legislative act divided Bucks County into two parts, Upper Southampton and Lower Southampton. The line dividing the two townships ran north to south through what is now the center of the Borough of Northampton.
Lower Southampton remained a rural, agricultural community until the midtwentieth century. Dairy farming was a major industry in the area. In addition to the many family farms, there were also several large dairy farms, including the W.D. Haines farm and the Newark Farm.
The township began to see some residential development in the 1950s and 1960s. The opening of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in 1956 made Lower Southampton more accessible to Philadelphia and other cities. This led to more people moving to the area for both work and recreation.
