History of Livermore

Livermore, California, is a city located in Alameda County. In 1869, Livermore was founded by Robert Livermore, a ranchero who had come to California from New Mexico in 1835. The city was named after him. Livermore was originally part of Rancho Las Positas y Corte de Madera del Presidio, a Mexican land grant that encompassed much of what is now eastern Alameda County.

Livermore quickly became a thriving community, with a stagecoach stop, a post office, a hotel, and a blacksmith shop. The city soon became a center for farming and ranching. In 1876, the first school was built. A few years later, a Methodist church was constructed. The city continued to grow throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

In the early 20th century, Livermore became known for its many wineries. The Livermore Valley Winegrowers Association was formed in 1884, and by 1916 there were over 50 wineries in the area. The wine industry thrived in Livermore until Prohibition was enacted in 1919.

After Prohibition was repealed in 1933, the wine industry in Livermore began to rebound. In the 1960s, Livermore was designated as a *City of Destiny* by thenMayor Marshall Kamena. This designation signaled the city’s commitment to becoming a worldclass center for science and technology.

In the 1970s, two research laboratories, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories, were established in the city. These labs have brought in many hightech companies and jobs to the area. Livermore is now home to over 700 companies, and the city’s economy is largely based on the science and tech industries.

Livermore has a long and rich history. It is a city that has undergone many changes, from its early days as a ranching and farming community, to its more recent transformation into a hightech hub. The city has a bright future, and is poised to continue its momentum as a leading center for science and technology.
