History of Levittown (Pennsylvania)

In August 1947, Bill Levitt & Sons, Inc., began construction on a 2,000acre plot of land in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The site was to become the world’s first planned suburb, and would come to be known as Levittown.

The development was originally conceived as a housing solution for returning World War II veterans and their families. It was to be Levitt’s third such community, following earlier ventures in Norfolk, Virginia and Long Island, New York.

To accommodate the influx of residents, Levitt & Sons built 17,447 Cape Cod and ranchstyle homes, each with a small plot of land. The homes were sold for a uniform price of $7,990, and could be purchased with a low down payment and a 30year mortgage.

The first Levittown home was completed in February 1948, and the last in October 1958. In all, some 60,000 people moved to the community.

Levittown quickly became a symbol of the postwar economic boom, and represented a new way of life for many Americans. The town was widely copied, and helped to usher in a new era of mass suburbanization.

Today, Levittown is home to a diverse population of roughly 52,000 people. It has retained its status as a bedroom community, and remains a peaceful place to raise a family.
