History of Leadville
Leadville is a Home Rule Municipality that is the county seat and only incorporated municipality in Lake County, Colorado, United States. The city population was 2,625 at the 2010 United States Census. Situated at an elevation of 10,152 feet (3,094 m), Leadville is the highest incorporated city and the second highest incorporated municipality in the United States. In the late 19th century, Leadville was the capital of the Colorado Silver Boom and the ninthlargest city in the United States.
A brief mining history of the area:
In the summer of 1859, placer gold was discovered in California Gulch by a group of prospectors from Georgia. The discovery caused an explosion of people to the area. Within the first year, approximately 10,000 miners had flocked to the area in search of their fortunes.Six months after the initial discovery, a lode of silver ore was discovered near Oregon Gulch. This lode proved to be even more valuable than the placer gold and resulted in the development of many more mines in the area.
The first silver claims in the area were filed in the summer of 1860. The following summer, a town was platted and named Oro City. However, the boom was shortlived and, by the fall of 1861, most of the miners had left Oro City in search of richer strikes. A few prospectors remained and, in the summer of 1862, one of them, H. A. Chapman, discovered a lode of silver ore on Mt. Massive. He built a cabin and laid claim to the ground.
During the winter of 18621863, a number of miners relocated to the area and began mining the Mt. Massive lode. In June 1863, a town was platted and named Leadville after the heavy lead concentration in the nearby streams. The Mt. Massive strike proved to be very rich and, within a few years, Leadville became the largest city in Colorado with a population of over 10,000.
The silver boom came to an end in 1893 when the price of silver collapsed. Many of the mines closed and the population of Leadville dropped sharply. The town managed to survive, however, and, in the early 20th century, became a center for the production of lead and zinc. The city once again prospered and, by the 1950s, its population had reached over 20,000.
Today, Leadville is a popular tourist destination. Visitors come to experience the city’s rich history, tour the local mines, and hike or ski in the nearby mountains.
