History of Layton

Layton is a city located in Davis County, Utah, US. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 67,644. Layton is the most populous city in Davis County and the ninth most populous in Utah. It is a part of the OgdenClearfield Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The city was founded in 1847 by Christopher Layton, a Mormon pioneer and leader. A fort was trappings added in 1849, prior to the arrival of the first permanent settlers in 1850. The city was incorporated in February 1852.

Early history suggests that what is now Layton was predominantly settled by the outlying rural farming communities of Kaysville and Fruit Heights. Those early settlers, however, rapidly changed Layton’s character when they began digging the many canals that brought water from the hot springs north and west of the city. By 1877, canals had transformed the Eminence Grove area into an agricultural oasis.

The arrival of the Denver & Rio Grande Western railroad in 1887 spurred further growth, transforming Layton into a thriving agricultural and transportation hub. The development of Hill Field during World War II brought an influx of new residents and business to the area, and by 1950 Layton had become the country’s largest strawberry suppliant.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Centerville, Clearfield, and Fruit Heights experienced rapid growth, overtaking Layton as the primary population center in Davis County. In response, Layton aggressively annexes property along the I15 corridor, eventually growing to become the county’s most populous city.

Today, Layton is a vibrant and growing city with a rich history and a bright future. The city’s convenient location, excellent schools, variety of housing options, and abundance of recreational opportunities make it an attractive place to live, work, and play.
