History of Columbus (Nebraska)
The city of Columbus, Nebraska is located in the Platte County of Nebraska and is the county seat. The city was founded in 1856 and was named after Christopher Columbus. The city has a population of over 22,000 people and is the 19th largest city in Nebraska.
The first settlers of Columbus were from Illinois and Indiana. They were attracted to the area because of the rich soil and the good climate for farming. The first permanent settlers arrived in the autumn of 1856. There were only a few families at first, but more came in the following years. In 1857, a post office was established and the town became the county seat of Platte County.
The early years of Columbus were difficult. Many of the settlers were farmers and they had to work hard to clear the land and plant crops. There was also the threat of Indian attacks. In 1862, during the Sioux Uprising, a band of Sioux Indians attacked a farm near Columbus, killing the man and his family. The settlers were very afraid and many of them left the area.
But, in 1863, the Union Pacific Railroad was completed and it went through Columbus. This was a big boost to the economy and more people began to move to Columbus. The city soon had stores, hotels, churches, and schools. In 1867, the first newspaper was published.
The city of Columbus continued to grow in the following years. In 1874, the first bank was established. A brickyard and a flour mill were built in 1875. More railroads were built in the 1880s, making Columbus an important center for trade and transportation. Today, Columbus is a prosperous city with a strong economy.
