The town was initially called Londonderry, after the city in Ireland from which many of the settlers had come. Early on, the town was mostly agricultural, with the main crops being flax and wheat. The Industrial Revolution brought new opportunities to Derry, as the construction of canals and railways opened up new markets for the town’s products. The 19th century also saw a large influx of Irish immigrants to Derry, as many came to escape the famine in Ireland. This helped to increase the population of the town, and also led to the construction of several Roman Catholic churches in Derry. The 20th century was a time of growth for the city, as new schools and businesses were established. The city also became known for its shoe manufacturing industry.
