The first settlers in the area were Puritans who arrived in Newark in 1666. They were a heterogeneous group consisting of English, Dutch, French Huguenots, and Germans. The English were the largest group, and the English Predominance was reflected in the community’s name, “Newark Mountain”.

The area that is now Millburn was originally part of Newark Township, which was created on October 31, 1693, and comprised all the land in presentday Essex County west of the Passaic River. On March 11, 1710, Springfield Township was partitioned from Newark Township, and essentially encompassed the area that is presently Millburn. On February 7, 1798, the area was incorporated as Union Village, and included all or portions of what are now the presentday townships of Livingston, Millburn and Union. Millburn was originally a subsection of Union Village. In 1814, the name of the community was changed to Vauxhall, after the British car manufacturer Vauxhall Motors, and remained so until 1857, when the name was again changed, this time to Newark Mountain.

The area grew quickly as farms were established and taverns were built to accommodate the stagecoaches that began to ply thelinear NewarkMorristown Road running through the middle of the township. The growth of Newark and New York City, as well as the construction of the Erie Canal and the Morris and Essex Railroad in the early 19th century, spurred development in the area even further.
